Safe roof access for bus maintenance – compliant with standards, practical and economically sound

An increasing amount of the technology in modern city buses and coaches is installed on the vehicle roof. Air conditioning systems, ventilation units, control units, antennas and solar modules must be regularly inspected, serviced or replaced. This results in recurring work at heights of between around 2.7 and 3.7 metres, which often has to be carried out under time pressure and with tools or spare parts in hand. From an occupational safety perspective, these are activities with a risk of falling, which require clearly structured and suitable work equipment.

Improvised solutions such as leaning ladders or makeshift platforms do not meet these requirements in the long term. They usually offer neither sufficient space for movement nor closed side protection and make ergonomic working difficult. For transport and maintenance companies, this means that access to the bus roof must be planned as an integral part of the maintenance concept.

Technical solution with defined adjustment range

The height-adjustable and mobile work plattform with a guardrail cage creates optimal conditions. With a platform height range of 2,700 to 3,700 millimetres, it can be used on different types of buses without the need for separate systems. The height is adjusted using a low-maintenance rack and pinion mechanism operated by a hand crank. Alternatively, a standard cordless screwdriver can be used. This mechanical solution combines robustness with flexibility and avoids the use of complex drive systems.

Safe ascent and enclosed fall protection

Access is via a side-mounted towed staircase with double castors. The 600 x 225 millimetre corrugated aluminium steps provide sufficient tread even when wearing heavy footwear. A railing consisting of handrails and knee rails on both sides ensure safe ascent and descent.

On the upper working level, an slip-resistant aluminium covering with a grooved structure ensures a secure footing, while the lower level is finished with robust chequer plate.

A foldable railing cage extends the working area to approximately 2,635 x 5,000 millimetres. When folded out, the railing elements automatically lock into place and form a surrounding side guard. Lowerable foot rails reduce the gap between the platform and the vehicle roof, thus reducing the risk of falling objects.

With a load capacity of up to 300 kilograms, the platform is designed for typical maintenance situations where two people are working at the same time or components are temporarily stored.

Mobile in storage, stable in use

In everyday workshop use, mobility and stability are just as important as fall protection. Four handles on the front allow for controlled movement along the vehicle. Castors with locking brakes secure the position, while height-adjustable spindle feet compensate for uneven floors. Rubberised impact protection on the edge of the platform protects both the structure and the vehicle surface when approaching.

Normative classification and operational benefits

When working at this height, the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Industrial Safety Regulation must be taken into account. Employers are obliged to provide suitable work equipment and to effectively minimise hazards. A work platform with a closed railing cage, defined load capacity and safe access systematically meets these basic requirements.

Furthermore, this solution has a direct impact on process quality. Recurring tasks such as air conditioning servicing, filter replacement or visual inspections can be planned and carried out using clearly defined procedures. Since no interim solutions need to be set up, set-up times are reduced. Different vehicle heights can be accommodated without any design modifications.

Standardised yet adaptable

The platform is available at short notice in a standardised version, which makes investment decisions easier. Depending on the hall concept, you can choose between a version with a one-sided or two-sided railing cage. This allows the solution to be adapted to the spatial conditions and organisational processes without the need for a completely customised design.

The maintenance of modern bus roofs is not an exception, but part of daily operations. A height-adjustable, mobile work platform with a railing cage creates defined, standard-compliant conditions for this. It combines safe access, a generous work surface, robust mechanics and flexible adaptation to different vehicle types.
