TRBS 2121-2: Work safely and in compliance with regulations with KRAUSE

Many users are unaware of their obligations and risk more than they think.

The safe handling of ladders is one of the key challenges on construction sites, in trade businesses and in industry and facility management. What many users don't realise: The Technical Rule for Operational Safety TRBS 2121-2 fundamentally changed the rules for the professional use of ladders back in 2018. However, even years after it came into force, there is still a lot of uncertainty - sometimes due to ignorance, sometimes due to habit and often due to incorrect risk assessment.

TRBS-compliant use of ladders

Traffic route or workplace - an important distinction

TRBS 2121 Part 2 makes a clear distinction between the use of ladders as a traffic route and their use as a workplace. If a ladder is only climbed in order to reach a higher level, for example, it is referred to as a traffic route. In this case, both rung and step ladders may be used up to a height of five metres. However, if the user remains on the ladder to carry out work - for example drilling, assembly or installation - it is considered a workplace. This is where the central change comes in: Rung ladders are no longer permitted in this case. Instead, ladders with sufficiently wide steps must be used to increase the standing area, improve ergonomics and significantly reduce the risk of falling.

Consequences of non-compliance - legally and practically risky

The consequences of non-compliance with this regulation are not only theoretical. Accidents at work on unsuitable ladders can not only lead to serious injuries, but can also result in liability on the part of the contractor, sanctions by the employers' liability insurance association or, in extreme cases, even the closure of the construction site by the health and safety authorities. Anyone working as a contractor, safety officer or person responsible for selecting work equipment should therefore know exactly what the requirements of TRBS 2121-2 are - and how to fulfil them in practice.

KRAUSE +S ladders: A solution for every situation

As one of the leading suppliers of access technology in Germany, KRAUSE responded to this challenge at an early stage and developed an innovative and practical solution with the STABILO +S ladders. The special feature of these ladders is their hybrid design: They combine classic rungs with integrated steps, allowing them to be used both as a traffic route and as a workstation - without any additional attachments or suspension elements. This saves assembly time, reduces weight and avoids operating errors. Available as a two-section and three-section multipurpose ladder, extension ladder and leaning ladder, these +S models can be used directly as a traffic route or workstation as required. The seamless transition between rung and step on the multi-part ladders is additionally supported by the striking blue wide safety rung, which provides visual orientation and ergonomic preparation for frequent changes of use.

Further TRBS-compliant solutions for all areas of application

In addition to the +S ladders, KRAUSE offers other access technology solutions that fulfil the requirements of TRBS 2121-2 as a workplace. In particular, step ladders with deep treads represent a simple but extremely effective option for compliant implementation. Step ladders, working platforms, telescopic step ladders and wooden step ladders are characterised by their particularly high stability and innovative installation options and offer added safety thanks to the comfortable standing surfaces of the steps. Folding platform ladders made of aluminium, which are often used for longer work or in maintenance, also fully meet the requirements of the TRBS as a workplace. Their slip-resistant steps, railings and large platforms not only increase work safety, but also relieve the strain on personnel during physically strenuous activities.

Flexible solutions for changing work environments

Especially in industrial environments, where the workplace is often not static and the work locations change regularly, flexible solutions are required. Here, KRAUSE offers mobile platform ladders, folding platform ladders or individually configurable mobile access technology systems that can be adapted to the structural conditions. For example, access solutions to machines, racking systems or maintenance levels can be created without having to erect complex stationary structures.

The right ladder protects people and companies

The decisive factor remains: Anyone who works with ladders bears responsibility - for themselves, for their employees and for compliance with legal regulations. TRBS 2121-2 is not a bureaucratic hurdle, but an instrument for preventing accidents and making work safer. Companies that opt for compliant products at an early stage not only reduce their liability risk, but also invest in efficiency and health protection.

KRAUSE not only offers the right products for this, but also comprehensive training and advice - on request directly on site, online or in our in-house training centre.
