Fixed ladders and their standards: Your guide to safety and regulations

Fixed ladders are indispensable components for safe access to workplaces at height and for escape routes. Depending on the area of use and function, there are various standards that regulate the design, assembly and inspection of these ladders:

DIN 18799-1:2019

  • Regulates requirements for fixed fixed ladders that are attached to structures (buildings).
  • Concerns the construction, assembly and testing of these ladders.
  • Focuses on safety requirements for safe access to workplaces at height.
  • Contains specifications for materials, dimensions, exit points and the load-bearing capacity of fixed ladder systems.

DIN 14094-1:2017

  • Refers to the planning and construction of emergency ladder systems as escape routes.
  • Focus on escape routes and safe evacuation of people in an emergency.
  • Requirements for safety equipment, such as sufficiently wide escape routes, stability and rapid accessibility.
  • This standard does not apply to work ladders, but specifically for emergency use.

DIN 18799-3:2021

  • Supplements DIN 18799-1 and specifies special requirements for accessories for fixed ladders on structures.
  • Defines safety requirements for fall protection devices, passage barriers and other additional equipment.
  • New rules for the exit onto roofs and avoiding unsecured areas when climbing the ladder.
  • This standard does not apply to mechanical equipment or shaft ladders.
  • Further information on DIN 18799-3:2021

DIN EN ISO 14122-4:2016

  • Applies to fixed ladders attached to mechanical facilities.
  • Regulates safe access to machinery via fixed ladders.
  • This standard focuses on the industrial sector and the maintenance of plant and machinery using fixed ladders.

Planning aid for access ladders according to the new standard

Use our practical planning aid for fixed ladders in accordance with the new standard. This will give you an initial overview of the possibilities for using fixed ladders.

Which standard is relevant for your fixed ladder?

Whether as access to a building, as an escape route or for maintenance work on machinery - each standard ensures that your fixed ladders meet the specific requirements of the area of application. Especially with older systems, it may be necessary to retrofit the existing fixed ladder systems, as some standards, such as DIN 18799-3:2021, do not offer grandfathering for older systems. Contact us for customised advice to ensure that your fixed ladder complies with the applicable standards and offers maximum safety!

Shaft ladders made of steel and stainless steel

Our shaft ladders are available in two different widths and different materials depending on the intended use, e.g. safe descent for inspection and maintenance work in sewage treatment plants, drinking water supply systems, landfills, retention basins and other shaft systems. Various access aids are available for safe entry and exit.

Where KRAUSE is, there is safety - Fixed ladders

Fixed ladders are technical work equipment and represent a source of danger. The entrepreneur must ensure that a qualified person commissioned by him carries out a recurring work equipment check to ensure that the fixed and shaft ladders are in proper condition.
