Where KRAUSE is, there is safety - mobile scaffolding
Mobile scaffolding is technical work equipment and represents a source of danger. The contractor must ensure that a qualified person commissioned by him carries out a recurring work equipment check to ensure that the aluminum scaffolding is in proper condition.

As the name suggests, mobile working platforms (mobile scaffolds) are mobile scaffolding whose working position can be easily adjusted even when erected. As less material is required, mobile scaffolding is a more cost-effective alternative to façade scaffolding. Mobile scaffolds can be erected by anyone, whereas a scaffolder is required for façade scaffolding. However, the assembly height is limited to a maximum height, which relates to both the assembly location and the attached safety accessories. Due to the height restriction, mobile scaffolding is particularly suitable for detached houses and industrial buildings of moderate height.
Theoretically, mobile scaffolding can also be assembled without castors if the position of the scaffolding does not need to be changed during use. The standardised technical term "mobile working platform" is the official designation for the work equipment usually referred to as "mobile scaffolding" in everyday language. Other common terms are rolling scaffold, mobile scaffold, mobile scaffolding, working platform or lightweight scaffold. All these terms refer to the same product, a single-span scaffolding structure.
As a general rule, a working height of 10 metres (top platform + 2.0 m) must not be exceeded outdoors. Indoors, KRAUSE rolling towers can reach working heights of up to 14.50 metres.
The working height of a mobile scaffold tower or mobile working platform is the maximum height that can be reached with the hands when standing on the uppermost platform. The difference between the working height and the standing height is always 2 metres.
Standing height + 2 metres = working height
Every KRAUSE aluminium rolling tower comes with the appropriate assembly and usage instructions, which are also available online as a download for the respective product series. The assembly and usage instructions explain the assembly of the mobile scaffolds step by step. They also provide the ballasting information required for each extension. The changes to the DIN EN 1004 standard for mobile working platforms have also resulted in fundamental changes to the assembly and dismantling of KRAUSE mobile scaffolds. One of these changes stipulates that guardrails and struts must always be assembled from the platform below; for the first platform of a mobile scaffold tower from the ground. Alternatively, guardrails and struts can also be fitted through the open platform hatch. For safety reasons, KRAUSE has decided against this method for all mobile scaffolds and allows assembly from the level below.
All KRAUSE mobile scaffolds are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The castors on many models can be adjusted to the ground using a spindle. From a defined working height, stabilisers and ballast weights also secure the work on the mobile scaffold towers. It should be noted that different ballasting specifications apply when erecting outdoors due to the increased wind load. These can be found in the instructions for assembly and use.
The KRAUSE scaffolding series STABILO folding scaffold, MONTO ProTec XS, ProTec XS 1000, RollTec and RollTec folding scaffold as well as CORDA folding scaffold have a basic unit that can be folded up in a few simple steps. When folded, it can be transported and stored quickly and easily and can be reassembled just as quickly when used again. All KRAUSE rolling towers are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
The platform of a scaffold is the horizontal standing surface on which the scaffold users stand during work and during assembly and dismantling. The waterproof phenolic resin screen-printed plate is slip-resistant and is climbed through by the user via the attached self-closing hatch for ascent and descent. For scaffolding with a double working surface, one platform with hatch and one platform without hatch are hooked into the vertical frame on each level.
Due to the changes in the design specifications of the DIN EN 1004 standard, platforms may only be suspended at a maximum distance of 2.25 metres. This change (previously a distance of up to 4.00 m was possible) means that more platforms and guardrails are required. KRAUSE has also reduced the maximum distance between the platforms required by the standard to 2.00 m in order to make scaffolding assembly even safer and more convenient. The lowest platform may be assembled at a maximum height of 3.40 metres.
Gravity pins are used to secure vertical frames against unintentional lifting. They secure loosely joined tubular connections or vertical frames. The galvanised pins are inserted into overlapping holes in two elements and automatically fall into a position in which they can no longer come loose on their own.
Longitudinal and transversal boards serve as side protection and are attached to the uppermost platform. They are designed to prevent accidental slipping on the platform. Accidentally dropped small parts or tools can also be caught by the transversal and longitudinal boards. These can represent an increased hazard potential when falling from the top scaffolding level.
Stabilisers provide secure support and stability for a mobil scaffold and are attached to the vertical frames. Depending on the assembly location and height, two or four stabilisers must be attached. The use of stabilisers increases the assembly area and has an influence on the necessary ballasting of the rolling tower, which can be found in the ballasting table in the instructions for assembly and use.
Ballast weights weighing 10 kg are used for KRAUSE aluminium mobile scaffolds. These are attached to the travelling stabiliser or special ballast holders. Depending on the assembly height and place of use, different numbers of ballast weights must be attached to the four corner points of a scaffold tower. The exact number can be found in the ballasting table in the instructions for assembly and use.
The GuardMatic-System is an advanced guardrail that can be hooked into the vertical frames from the lower level or from the ground. It combines guardrail brace, knee rail and diagonal brace in one scaffolding component. It was developed as part of the amendment to the standard for mobile working platforms DIN EN 1004 in 2021, as the assembly and dismantling of mobile scaffolding without an advanced guardrail previously posed an increased risk potential. If a user climbs through the platform hatch with the GuardMatic-System fitted, there is always a guardrail all round to protect against falls. The use of the GuardMatic-System also reduces the number of individual parts, which also facilitates the transport and logistics of the mobile scaffolding. The 6-point fixation of the GuardMatic-System with the vertical frame ensures maximum stability at height and facilitates assembly and dismantling. After use, the diagonal braces can be folded in and secured for transport.
A wide mobile scaffold is a scaffold with a double working surface. Instead of one platform as a walking and working surface, two platforms are suspended in the double-width vertical frame. In this design variant, one platform with hatch and one platform without hatch are used on each level. Thanks to the double working surface, these mobil scaffold can also be used by two people on one level. The wide superstructure also allows the use of stairs to access the mobile scaffold.
Access to an aluminum scaffold with castors is via the vertical frame on the inside of the rolling tower. The profiled rungs are climbed like a ladder and the user passes through the platform hatch. In the case of small scaffolding with a footprint of up to one meter, the platform can be climbed directly. Wide scaffold towers with stairs are climbed via the stairs. In this case, a special platform with a large hatch is used. The use of a stairway makes access to the mobile aluminum scaffold even safer and makes it possible to transport smaller quantities of material, heavy parts and larger tools to the upper platform.
The maximum load of the platforms is specified in kg/m². Mobile scaffolds are divided into different scaffolding groups depending on the area of application. Only load classes 2 and 3 are relevant for mobile scaffolding:
- Load class 2: Activities that do not require the storage of building materials
- Load class 3: Activities that require the storage of light building materials or materials
For each of the load classes, a maximum load of the platforms in kg/m² applies. Depending on the size of the platform, the total load can be determined. This is always stated in the instructions for assembly and use of the respective scaffolding.
Depending on the version, KRAUSE mobile scaffolds can be equipped with castors, stabilizsers, stabilisation sets and ballast weights. These can be purchased as accessories for some mobile scaffolds. Furthermore, KRAUSE mobile scaffolds can be equipped with a practical hook-in tool storage tray.
